Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

At PEDAL, we are committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion in our values, our teaching, and our research. Centre-specific EDI discussions and initiatives are conducted in addition to engaging with and adhering to the University of Cambridge's and the Faculty of Education’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion policies.

PEDAL’s EDI policy provides staff, students, collaborators, and visitors with an overview of the centre’s EDI-related expectations, beliefs, commitments, and priorities. In it, we identify key standards and objectives related to our general conduct as a team and our research and teaching practices.

PEDAL’s commitment

Promoting EDI generally, and engaging with initiatives to establish and improve EDI, is the responsibility of all members of the PEDAL Centre. The ways in which we support equity, diversity, and inclusion will continue to develop, evolve, and improve as we learn more, as we become more reflective, and as we feel more able to challenge inequalities and oppression.

Our commitments to EDI operate under the following guiding principles:

  1. Inclusiveness and diversity underpin excellence and we strive to create a community and environment that values and upholds the rights and dignity of PEDAL members, those our work involves, and those our work affects.
  2. The representation, progression, and success of staff and students from historically under-represented and/or marginalised groups is essential so that the diverse talents, perspectives and experiences of all our members are supported and respected.

We are committed to building upon and nurturing a community that values diversity, actively promotes dignity and inclusion, and tackles discrimination in all its forms. Our commitment to this applies when working with one another as well as with collaborators or visitors to the centre, both online and face-to-face.

We encourage ways of working that are rooted in compassion and empathy and that uphold our stated commitment to EDI practices. Striving to better understand and value our differences will allow us to celebrate the positive effects diversity brings to our workplace.

PEDAL’s objectives

We operate under the guidance established by the EDI board of the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge. As a centre, we have also established a specific set of objectives related to recruitment, training, awareness-raising, research, and teaching that are necessary to commit to the promotion of EDI. These specific objectives are monitored and reviewed annually. Broadly-speaking, our overarching objectives are as follows:

  1. We will embed the responsibility for promoting and upholding our EDI principles across all levels of the PEDAL Centre.
  2. We are committed to offering one another respect, trust, kindness and understanding as we work to bring about a cultural change. Conversations around inclusion, diversity, racism, and discrimination are rarely simple, easy, or comfortable. We are prepared to support each other through that discomfort.
  3. We will identify barriers related to recruitment, progression, and management, and make improvements to our recruitment practices, to diversify staff recruitment and student admission.
  4. We will promote and employ inclusive research, teaching, and learning practices.
  5. We are committed to improving the overall experiences and support of BAME and historically under-represented staff and students.
  6. We will ensure that there are opportunities for both staff and student members of the centre to participate in training on inclusivity, implicit bias, and race awareness.
